Masada

Our first stop near the Dead Sea was Masada. It is a large flat topped mountain in the middle of the desert. There was a cable car to take us up and yes, I rode it without fear!!! The last picture shows the view looking down at the 3 tiers where Herod built his magnificent palace. It was supposed to be his get away place if he and his family were run out of town. It was later used for Jewish Zealots who were hiding out from the Romans. A huge army of Romans came to lay seige on Masada and built a ramp up to the gate. When they reached the top, all the Jews were dead. That day it was about 104 degrees on our bus so who knows how hot it was on the mountain. It was worth the trip for the view.
