In the afternoon on Monday, we went west of Thessoloniki to the city that we know as Berea in Acts. A few miles out of the city is the burial grounds of Phillip the second of Macedonia. He was the father of Alexander, the great. Maria told us that this history is so important to Christianity because Alexander, the Great carried the Greek language as far as India allowing for the spread of gospel. We couldn't make pictures in the tomb. Words can't tell how beautifully it was decorated. Lots of gold adorned the tomb. The mountains near this area had lots of gold during Phillip's time. Three of the most memorable artifacts were the wreath made of gold leaves with acorns on it, the gold box where Phillip's bones were and the piece of purple fabric with gold sewn into the fabric. Maria reminded us of the story of Lydia in Acts who was a seller of purple which was a type of fabric used then.
